Meet Kayla

Hey there!

Welcome to the Online School of Poetry! I started a workshop through the Lizard a while back called the Words of Wisdom Poetry Workshop and it was picking up some speed, but then – ya know- Corona hit and all. Bummer. That’s why I’m so excited to join the amazing group of instructors we have on here. I’m compiling my course and can’t wait to get started.

In the meantime, a little about me:

I like to consider myself a renaissance woman.

With degrees in Criminal Justice, Theatre Arts, Psychology, and Applied Behavior Analysis I dabble in both the arts and sciences. By day, I work as a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) with families affected by autism and other social disabilities. By night, I am an avid reader, writer, actress, director, producer, and poet. At any given moment I’ve got a handful of projects in the works.

First off, I’ve got the prod company. I founded Spectrum Studios Theatre as a way to foster a creative and collaborative environment for aspiring artists both on and off the spectrum through workshops and productions. That’s been really hard to do in the past two years. Budget and all. But I’ve been lucky enough to meet some amazing people to collaborate with and get some stuff done. You can check out our website here (be gentle its a work in progress):

I’m always writing something. Whether it be poetry to slam, jam, or never show the light of day to. Or a novel I may one day – who the hell knows- finish. I’m also editing some works for other artist friends! Currently I am collaborating with an illustrator to finish a collection of my poetry so be on the look out for that!

My newest addition to the works is a podcast! Never-ever thought I’d be a person who does a podcast, but hey, here we are. At “What’s the Story” I am joined by my friend Ron to talk about the aspects of storytelling. We work together to analyze what makes stories work, how they function, and which ones do it best. You can check it out on spotify or anywhere podcasts are heard!

It’s not all work and no play!

I live at home with my fiancee, our 200 pound puppy Copper, and our demon-cat Batman. I love to travel (stupid corona), read anything I can get my hands on, hike (nothing top notch, just the easy stuff), and binge watch Netflix (like every other human on the planet).

That about sums it up. Can’t wait to get started! See you all soon.

With Love,
